Forgotten heroes: June 1821 – Sacred Band! Article by N.G.Michaloliakos

"Let it never rain
The cloud, and the wind
Hard not to scatter
The soil is blessed
That covers you. "

To the Holy Lodge

Somewhere in the center of Athens there is a large grove called Pedion of Areos. Its name is not accidental. It is a place devoted to the Memory of the Great Men, who honored the Homeland separately. For this reason, there is also the Heroes Avenue at a point in Grove, where the Heroes busts were placed in the 1930s. The bones of Alexandros Ypsilantis, the leader of the Society of Friendship, who first began the Revolution of the Genus against Turkish tyranny in February 1821, were also transferred there. In this area today, to the glory of the state of the vassals, where are the bones those who first declared our National Revolution the crime odors every night, and the Heroes' Avenue where the busts of the Saints of the Nation are there, is now a place where prostitutes, retailers and illegal immigrants are frequented! This is not an unforeseen happening... It is no coincidence that in the name of this rotten pseudo-democratic they disgrace every sacred and sanctified one that concerns either the Faith or the History of our Genesis. Their purpose is the de-sacramental, because the demolition of symbols, Saints and Heroes uproot the soul of our people, every resistance force against their plans to change the Nation of Greeks into a dull and impersonal mass of "good" citizens of the age of globalization. But let's go back to History.

The glorious “mavrophori” of death

Full of passion and momentum prince Alexandros Ypsilantis, honored General in the battlefields, passed ιn that February the River Prouthos, without knowing the betrayal that would follow. By his side, worthy warriors, many of whom honored their oath in the battles that followed, as well as cowards and traitors, who at the crucial moment left the fight. Among them and a separate body: The Holy Lodge! It consisted of young Greeks, mostly students, who were studying at the Universities of Europe. It was literally the flower of Greece. Scientists with a special education at that time, when everything was clouded from menace and slavery. But they had decided to die for Greece! Their outfit was black, so they called them “mavrophori” and on their cap there was a skull with two crossbones as a symbol of their decision to die. As a symbol of their faith, that the sacrifice for the Homeland is above ephemeral life. Their Flag was Tricolor, as imposed by the Friendly Company.

We read about it in Article XI. The Greek flag, both in the land troops and in the sea, must be made of three colors: white, black and red. White means the innocence of our righteous combat against the tyrants, the black for our homeland and our freedom of death and the red the self-sufficiency of the Greek people and its joy because it fights for the resurrection of the homeland. FRIENDLY COMPANY MILITARY LEGISLATION »

The Holy Lodge was literally slaughtered in June 1821 in Dragatsani, holding this Tri-color Flag. A few months later, thousands of miles away in the heart of the Peloponnese, a battle was struck, a battle for politics at the first National Assembly of Epidaurus about what the symbols and Flag of the new state would be. In this battle black, white and red and Phoenix of the Friendly Company were put aside. The Friendship Society was already under persecution. The Holy Lodge, as I mentioned earlier, was literally slaughtered in Dragatsani . In a battle that first seemed to be victorious and which would be victorious if the horsemen of Karavia had not left the Holy Lodge Men at the crucial moment because they were panicked by the Turkish attack. However, the Holy Lodge Men remained and only about a hundred managed to survive with the intervention of the Hero and warlord Yiorgakis Olympiou, who rushed for their help. In fact, the Flag of the Sacred Band was retrieved, since a warrior of the Holy Lodge managed to take the Flag from the hands of the Ensign who dropped dead. The name of the Ensign? Xenophon and nothing else, nothing else is indicated in history. Forgotten heroes and among them, the Centurion Valsamakis from Κefalonia, who was saved by passing onto the Russian shore of Prouthos and continued to fight for the National affair, returning to Greece in 1823. He lived until 1865 and our Nation this Centurion considered him to be only "an officer in charge"!!!

The Centurion, also, Nicholas Ypsilantis, who then fought in all battles in the Peloponnese and Central Greece, left memoirs, which, of course, no one knows today. A Centurion as well, Georgios Drakoulis. who left his last breath in Dragatsani. Passionate orator, who animated his comrades and who started from Russia to die in Dragatsani for Greece!  In Dragatsani also fell the brother of the famous poet Soutsou, Demetrius Soutsos, who at some time was also a leader of the Holy Lodge, who had translated the ancient Greek history of Segoure, which was published after his death in 1836 and which today no one knows it. Another Centurion of the Holy Lodge, who also fell heroically was Georgios Andronikos from Dimitsana, the brother of the prominent member of the Friendly Society Panagiotis Andronikos, who had written the famous battle hymn "Oh my children, my orphans scattered here and there, persecuted and insulted from the nations! Wake up children and the time has come...

About a hundred were the the Holy Lodge Men who were saved from the slaughter in Dragatsani. Heroes forgotten in the days of the vassals and among them, and 37 separate Greek children who were captured by the Turks and were transferred to the city of Constantinople, where they were all decapitated from the Ottoman executioner’s axe. . Their blood watered the soil of the Constantine City. Who were they? Their names are unknown, but their glory is great!
